Fetal and neonatal responses following maternal exposure to mobile phones.

Rezk AY, Abdulqawi K, Mustafa RM, Abo El-Azm TM, Al-Inany H.

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cairo University, Cairo, Egypt.

OBJECTIVE: To study fetal and neonatal heart rate (HR) and cardiac output (COP), following acute maternal exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by mobile phones. METHODS: The present study was carried out at Benha University Hospital and El-Shorouq Hospital, Cairo, Egypt, from October 2003 to March 2004. Ninety women with uncomplicated pregnancies aged 18-33 years, and 30 full term healthy newborn infants were included. The pregnant mothers were exposed to EMF emitted by mobile telephones while on telephone-dialing mode for 10 minutes during pregnancy and after birth. The main outcome were measurements of fetal and neonatal HR and COP. RESULTS: A statistical significant increase in fetal and neonatal HR, and statistical significant decrease in stroke volume and COP before and after use of mobile phone were noted. All these changes are attenuated with increase in gestational age. CONCLUSION: Exposure of pregnant women to mobile phone significantly increase fetal and neonatal HR, and significantly decreased the COP.

U.S. doctor links radio waves from cell phone towers to cancer, Alzheimer’s, senility, dementia, Parkinson’s and Autism
by Dr. Joseph Mercola

Unless you live in some unbelievably remote location, the odds are high that you’re being bombarded with information-carrying radio waves that can wreak havoc on your body.

These radio waves have increased dramatically and exponentially over the last few years -- especially from cell phones, but also from WiFi, WiMax, BlueTooth, and other wireless devices. For most people, the damage from this 24-7 exposure will take years or even decades to surface since there is a lag time of five to 20 years for the health effects to become clinically apparent.

For those unfortunate people in London, England, who were living directly below a major cell phone mast, the damage became apparent, sometime between the mast’s construction in 1994 and the beginning of the resident’s campaign to have the mast removed in 2002.

You may not realize that you are likely living closer to a cell phone tower than you think. Cell “sites” can look like antennas or huge towers, but they can also be quite camouflaged. They exist on many schools, churches, firehouses, cemeteries and even in national parks. If you’re wondering why a school or park would want a cell site on their grounds, it’s because the cell phone companies pay to have them there, with fees that can range upwards of $2,000 a month.

While there are already more than 175,000 cell towers in the United States (there is approximately 8,000 cell phone towers in Canada), this number is expected to increase by 48 percent to 260,000 by 2010, according to CTIA (the International Association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry).

If you want to know just how close you are to a cell phone tower or antenna, simply type your location into AntennaSearch.com. It will tell you all of the towers (existing and future) and antennas that are within about ten kilometres of your address!

Why are Increasing Cell Phone Towers so Concerning?

What most people, including experts, fail to understand is that the danger from land-based portable phones, cell phones and WiFi routers is not from the magnetic radiation or the microwave carrier wave from which typical SAR ratings are given on phones. Unless you have massive exposures like you might expect in a microwave oven, these thermal effects are insignificant.

Nearly all the biological damage comes from the modulated signals that are carried ON the carrier microwave. These modulated information-carrying radio waves resonate in biological frequencies of a few to a few hundred cycles per second, and can stimulate your vibrational cellular receptors causing a whole cascade of pathological consequences that can culminate in fatigue, anxiety and ultimately cancers.

Again, this is a very serious concern because, unless you live in an isolated rural setting, you are probably being exposed to these radio-waves day-in and day-out -- whether or not you even own or use a cell phone.

Numerous studies have linked exposure to information-carrying radio waves to health problems, but you may not realize that your symptoms are related to these radio frequencies because they could easily be attributed to other causes as well.

Aside from cancer and brain tumours, cells phones and other radio frequencies can cause:

-- Alzheimer’s, senility and dementia
-- Parkinson’s
-- Autism
-- Headaches
-- Sleep disruptions and fatigue
-- Altered memory function, poor concentration and spatial awareness

Can You Hear Me Now? The Truth the Cell Phone Industry Doesn’t Want You to Hear

One of the world’s undisputed experts in cell phone safety is Dr. George Carlo, and I had the privilege of spending two full days with him in October 2007.

I was so compelled with the information I heard that my next book, slated for release in 2009, will detail the reasons why I believe using cell phones is far more dangerous than smoking cigarettes ever was.

In the 1990s, Dr. Carlo was given a $28-million grant from the cell phone industry to put an end to the talk that cell phones were hazardous to your health. Unfortunately, what he found was not what he’d been paid to find. Instead, he discovered that they DO, in fact, cause damage.

The cell phone industry offered him a position for $1 million a year to silence him, but he refused, and started a non-profit institute called The Safe Wireless Initiative to inform the world of this danger instead. I highly recommend you check out his site as he has compiled excellent resources on interventions you can use to maximize your health and minimize your risks.

I also tried to spread the word about the dangers of cell phones via a Today Show interview I did last year. Well, they only aired four seconds of my 20-minute interview, completely censoring the supporting evidence that cell phones can cause damage.

Tips to Limit Your Damage from Information-Carrying Radio Waves

There quite simply is no safe biological threshold for exposure to information-carrying radio waves, and there is, quite honestly, little you can do to avoid them 100 percent.

But you can reduce your, and your family’s, exposure by taking the following commonsense precautions:

Limit the amount of time you spend on a cell phone or cordless phone.

Use a wired headset to limit your exposure to the cell phone -- ideally, an air tube headset that conducts sound but prevents any radiation from traveling up the wire to your brain. Also make sure the wire is SHIELDED, which prevents the wire from acting as an antenna that could attract more information-carrying radio waves directly to your brain. Wireless BlueTooth headsets should be avoided.

Limit your exposure to WiFi routers. Find out where they are located in your work environment and stay away from them.

If you have any land-based (non-cellular) portable phones, do NOT use anything other than the 900 MHz phones as the Gigahertz phones stay on continuously, blasting you with information-carrying radio waves 24/7.

Use the speakerphone instead of putting the phone to your ear; this is probably one of the single most important steps you can take other than not using your cell phone.

Limit calls inside buildings.

Use the phone in open spaces as often as possible.

Limit use by children and preadolescents, or don’t let them use cell phones at all. Children’s developing nervous systems and thinner skulls are simply too vulnerable to cell phone damage.

Gesundheit/Umwelt/Wissenschaft/Telekommunikation/IT/Steiermark New case study confirms increased cancer risk by portable radio radiation The Health Ministry examines the results of the collection of cancers in the periphery of 200 meters of a C-net-transmitting mobile phone base station close to Graz; Graz - Austrian Press Agency (APA) - stated a "significantly increased cancer risk in the periphery of 200 meters by portable telephone radio radiation" was determined by the Salzburg environmental physician Dr Gerd Oberfeld in the context of a study given by the health department of the county of Steiermark ordered in the year 2005. Cancer incidence data was collected in the area of Vasoldsberg / Hausmannstaetten (district of outer Graz) where a mobile phone base station for the C-net (NMT450) was operated from 1984 to 1997. Starting point of the study was the suspicion about the number of cancer illnesses in the local population. This was confirmed by the study author Dr Gerd Oberfeld. In the study design it was assumed that the mobile phone basestation could be a factor. The study area was a circular area with a radius of approximately 1,200 meters around the transmitter. A case control study was carried out using three different samples. One of the conditions was for people to live at least five years in the area being studied. The most meaningful sample covered 67 cases - living persons and the deceased cancer patients based on the medical records - compared with the 1,242 ‘control people’. With one of the three samples (84 persons) the radiation strength in the sleep areas measured using a test signal generator which was set up 25 meters beside the original basestation. In addition, the radiation levels were calculated with the help of a computer program. The agreement between the measurements and computations was very good according to Oberfeld: "that was a sufficiently good approach for the former exposure. This meant that the computation results could also be used for evaluating the larger samples. Vasoldsberg/Hausmannstaetten was "an exceptional case with an antenna height of only about eight meters, in the middle of a residential area", stated the study author in the APA discussion. Normally the omnidirectional antennas with a length of approximately two meters for C-net were located on higher masts on elevated sites. The distance between two transmitters lay usually in the range 30 to 50 kilometers. Oberfeld: "It would be meaningful to examine a second location with a similar features to confirm the result of Hausmannstaetten ." The results of the study caused the political head of the public health authority of Styria Helmut Hirt (S), to pass the study on directly to the "working group health effects of electromagnetic fields" of the Ministry of Health. The working group will examine the results further in February in a special meeting and will introduce further measures if necessary. The C-net, also as "in-car telephone C" become known, was switched off at the end of 1997 after 13 years. Like Austria, since 2004 other Western European countries have licensed the NMT 450MHz system again. In the year 2006 Austria and the Swedish Green network acquired the frequencies for a radio T-Mobile InterNet system. fst/wp/wh APA0079 2008-02-01/09:12 0109 12 February 08

Cell phone-cancer link found by Tel Aviv University scientist
Dr. Siegal Sadetzki.

An Israeli scientist, Dr. Siegal Sadetzki, has found a link between cell phone usage and the development of tumors.

Dr. Sadetzki, a physician, epidemiologist and lecturer at Tel Aviv University, published the results of a study recently in the American Journal of Epidemiology, in which she and her colleagues found that heavy cell phone users were subject to a higher risk of benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland.

Those who used a cell phone heavily on the side of the head where the tumor developed were found to have an increased risk of about 50% for developing a tumor of the main salivary gland (parotid), compared to those who did not use cell phones.

The fact that the study was done on an Israeli population is significant. Says Sadetzki, “Unlike people in other countries, Israelis were quick to adopt cell phone technology and have continued to be exceptionally heavy users. Therefore, the amount of exposure to radiofrequency radiation found in this study has been higher than in previous cell phone studies.

“This unique population has given us an indication that cell phone use is associated with cancer,” adds Sadetzki, whose study investigated nearly 500 people who had been diagnosed with benign and malignant tumors of the salivary gland.

Controlled Study Reveals Link

The study’s subjects were asked to detail their cell phone use patterns in terms of how frequently they used one, and the average length of calls. They were compared to a sample of about 1,300 healthy control subjects.

The study also found an increased risk of cancer for heavy users who lived in rural areas. Due to fewer antennas, cell phones in rural areas need to emit more radiation to communicate effectively.

Sadetzki predicts that, over time, the greatest effects will be found in heavy users and children.

While anecdotal evidence has been substantial, the consistency of the results of this study support an association between cell phone use and these tumors. The risks have been hard to prove, mainly due to the long latency period involved in cancer development, explains Sadetzki.

Keep Calling but Call Smarter

Today it is estimated that more than 90% percent of the Western world uses cell phones. As the technology becomes cheaper and more accessible, its usage by a greater number of people, including children, is bound to increase.

“While I think this technology is here to stay,” Sadetzki says, “I believe precautions should be taken in order to diminish the exposure and lower the risk for health hazards.” She recommends that people use hands-free devices at all times, and when talking, hold the phone away from one’s body. Less frequent calls, shorter in duration, should also have some preventative effect.

While she appreciates the ease of communication that cell phones allow between parents and their children, Sadetzki says that parents need to consider at what age their children start using them. Parents should be vigilant about their children’s using speakers or hands-free devices, and about limiting the number of calls and amount of time their children spend on the phone.

“Some technology that we use today carries a risk. The question is not if we use it, but how we use it,” concludes Sadetzki.

Sadetzki’s main research on this new study was carried out at the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology and Health Policy Research at the Sheba Medical Center. Her research is part of the international Interphone Study, which attempts to determine an association between cell phones and several types of brain and parotid gland tumors.

Occupational exposure to extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields and Alzheimer disease: a meta-analysis.García AM, Sisternas A, Hoyos SP.

Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University of Valencia, Spain.

BACKGROUND: Among potential environmental risk factors for Alzheimer disease (AD), occupational exposures have received some attention, including extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF). A systematic review and meta-analysis of published epidemiological studies on this subject was carried out. METHODS: The search was concluded in April 2006. Bibliographic databases consulted included PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and NIOSHTIC2. Pooled estimates were obtained using random-effects meta-analysis. Sources of heterogeneity between studies were explored, as was publication bias. RESULTS: Fourteen different studies (nine case-control and five cohort studies) accomplished inclusion criteria. All these studies followed standardized criteria for AD diagnosis and most of them obtained quantitative estimates of exposure. Pooled estimates suggest an increased risk of AD from case-control studies (OR(pooled) 2.03; 95% CI 1.38-3.00) and from cohort studies (RR(pooled) 1.62; 95% CI 1.16-2.27), with moderate to high statistical heterogeneity in both cases (respectively, I(2) = 58% and I(2) = 54%). Cohort studies showed consistently increased risks for exposed men (RR(pooled) 2.05; 95% CI 1.51-2.80, I(2) = 0%). Evidence of dose-response relationship was not present. Test for publication bias suggests small study effects, mostly for case-control studies. CONCLUSIONS: Available epidemiological evidence suggests an association between occupational exposure to ELF-EMF and AD. However, some limitations affecting the results from this meta-analysis should be considered. More information on relevant duration and time windows of exposure, on biological mechanisms for this potential association and on interactions between electromagnetic fields exposure and established risk factors for AD is needed.

Cells could be the death of insects
Guy Rogers ENVIRONMENT &0x0026; TOURISM EDITOR

TWO top South African insect specialists are in the final phase of a three-year study aimed at determining if there is a link between cellphone base stations and a perceived decline in insect populations.

Dr Max Clark and Peter Hawkes were commissioned by the Oppenheimer family business, E Oppenheimer and Son, following observations documented at the group‘s Brenthurst Gardens in Johannesburg and its Emzemvelo Nature Reserve at Bronkhorstspruit. “About R1-million” had been invested in the project so far, group conservation manager Duncan MacFadyen said.

Clark said the project had been initiated by Strilli Oppenheimer, wife of De Beers mining giant chairman Nicky Oppenheimer.

“She is very observant and has taken a great interest in the ecological balance of their properties. She was worried that she was seeing far fewer insects than she had 20 years ago, in particular the moths that used to gather at night around lights in the grounds. She wanted to know what was causing this.”

One of the possible reasons suggested by Oppenheimer was that electro-magnetic field (EMF) rays from the proliferation in urban areas of new cellphone base stations especially – but also by TV towers and Eskom pylons – might be interfering with insects‘ ability to communicate and reproduce.

The scientists set out to ascertain whether this was a factor and they also considered soil and light pollution and disturbance of habitat.

Starting with Brenthurst and Emzemvelo, they had moved their focus to 24 urban and rural sites around greater Gauteng ranging from 8ha to several hundred hectares.

They collected some 70000 sample insects, focusing on ants and ground beetles or “toktokkies”, Clarke explained.

Ants perform an earth-turning role similar to earthworms and carry bits of vegetation below ground to eat – key indicators of habitat health. The remains survive and re-grow, helping these plants to survive in the event of fire.

Some ant species are also key to the development of Lycaenid butterflies, carrying them below ground and protecting them from predators while drawing amino acids and carbohydrates from the larvae. Flightless beetles were important because they were more likely to be restricted to certain areas than flying beetles, Clark said. Using these indicator species, the scientists documented the diversity of insect species, population numbers, behaviour and other characteristics.

One of the “bi-catch” benefits of the study was the discovery of a number of new species of beetles and ants. On the specific research topic, a treasure trove of data and definite differences had been recorded at the different sites. This information was being analysed, said Clarke.

Ecologist Dr Mike Cohen, former director of the East Cape nature conservation department, said the results of the Oppenheimer project were of considerable significance because insects played a key role in nature.

“Depending on the results, it could mean a lot more will have to be taken into consideration when impact assessments for cellphone base stations or other transmitters are done.”

The results of the project are due to be presented by Clarke and Hawkes at Little Brenthurst on March 11.

Stavanger council reported to police

Stavanger has broken the Plan- and building law by introducing a wireless network in the town centre. This is the opinion of Norway's Environmental Safety Association, (NMF) which has now reported the council to the police.

Last week the wireless network in Stavanger town centre was turned on, and this allows you to turn on your computer and log on to the Internet more or less everywhere in the town centre.

NMF thinks the decision to make the town-centre wireless has been too hasty.

"People's health problems have not been taken into account at all. People are subject to the wireless network without the opportunity to protect themselves. We see a police report as the only possibility to state our case and to protect those who require it," says Sissel Halmøy, field manager for the electro-magnetic field of NMF.

Health problems

In the police report, NMF refers to the Plan- and building law, where matters which can have a significant effect on the environment, nature resources or society are examined. Programs and plans should be processed and made public, before resolutions are made.

NMF says that Stavanger council has not done so in this case.

In the police report, NMF refers to the work of world-leading scientists and researchers who have dealt with over 2000 scientific reports on the electromagnetic field and health.

The conclusion of the work is that health problems such as itching, headache, migraine, nausea, dizziness, concentration problems, tiredness and sleep problems can be related to the electromagnetic field.

At worst, long-term exposure to the electromagnetic field can lead to more serious illnesses such as ME and cancer, claims the report entitled The Bio Initiative.

Unaware of police report

The police report is not as yet registered as a case by Rogaland police district. Stavanger council is thereby also unaware of the report and its content.

Functioning health inspector in Stavanger, Jens Max Holm, says to Aftenbladet that the council has not considered it a threat to health to establish a wireless network in the town.

"We refer to the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority, and their view is that there is no danger linked to such a network," says Holm.

Concern-report in Trondheim

Stavanger, together with Trondheim are the two cities in the country which have concentrated most on the wireless network.

Today there are 12 base-stations for wireless network in the town centre, set up by Stavanger council. In addition there are networks by private parties.

So far, complaints about the network in Stavanger haven't occured. This is not so in Trondheim, where people have complained of health problems after the wireless network was introduced in the town in the autumn of 2006.

Several people complained of health problems after the network was introduced, which led to the county doctor in South-Trøndelag sending a concern report to the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority.

The Authority conducted surveys which concluded that the electromagnetic field from the network was not a breach of the appropriate limits, and that there therefore was no cause for concern.

Biological effects from electromagnetic field exposure and public exposure standards.Hardell L, Sage C.
Department of Oncology, University Hospital, SE-701 85 Orebro, Sweden.

During recent years there has been increasing public concern on potential health risks from power-frequency fields (extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields; ELF) and from radiofrequency/microwave radiation emissions (RF) from wireless communications. Non-thermal (low-intensity) biological effects have not been considered for regulation of microwave exposure, although numerous scientific reports indicate such effects. The BioInitiative Report is based on an international research and public policy initiative to give an overview of what is known of biological effects that occur at low-intensity electromagnetic fields (EMFs) exposure. Health endpoints reported to be associated with ELF and/or RF include childhood leukaemia, brain tumours, genotoxic effects, neurological effects and neurodegenerative diseases, immune system deregulation, allergic and inflammatory responses, breast cancer, miscarriage and some cardiovascular effects. The BioInitiative Report concluded that a reasonable suspicion of risk exists based on clear evidence of bioeffects at environmentally relevant levels, which, with prolonged exposures may reasonably be presumed to result in health impacts. Regarding ELF a new lower public safety limit for habitable space adjacent to all new or upgraded power lines and for all other new constructions should be applied. A new lower limit should also be used for existing habitable space for children and/or women who are pregnant. A precautionary limit should be adopted for outdoor, cumulative RF exposure and for cumulative indoor RF fields with considerably lower limits than existing guidelines, see the BioInitiative Report. The current guidelines for the US and European microwave exposure from mobile phones, for the brain are 1.6 W/Kg and 2 W/Kg, respectively. Since use of mobile phones is associated with an increased risk for brain tumour after 10 years, a new biologically based guideline is warranted. Other health impacts associated with exposure to electromagnetic fields not summarized here may be found in the BioInitiative Report at www.bioinitiative.org.
